Departing from Moshi a 2-HRS drive will take you through welcoming mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles here.
Trekking across a plateau of green moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations will require you to cover a lot of area today. We will hike via Shira 1 Camp on our way to Shira 2, where there are frequently vistas of Kibo Peak floating in the clouds. As we move closer to Shira 1, we gain some altitude and encounter some moderately steep terrain. You will get the opportunity to see the Northern Ice fields from the western side of the mountain as you go closer to Shira 2, along with some uncommon views of Kibo. Acclimatization will be aided by our slow ascent across the Shira Plateau's moorland, and we get to take in some beautiful panoramic views.
Your trek starts with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking in to the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs but with extensive views of the plains below.
We started our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m after a restful night's sleep and breakfast. We will traverse barren scree slopes along the ascent with no vegetation in sight. The altitude makes the steep walk much more challenging. After arriving at camp, we eat and take the afternoon to relax before a hard night and the following day. It's crucial to stay warm and hydrated. We have dinner early and then try to get some rest because we have to get up between 11 and 12 in the morning to begin the ascent.
Around midnight, we set out on a difficult ascent to the summit glaciers. We will spend 4 to 5 hours ascending scree but cover a modest distance to reach spectacular heights. The vistas are breathtaking. As the sun rises, we should be near Stella Point (5739m), on the crater rim. We are surrounded by stunning ice cliffs inside the crater, and we have breath-taking vistas of the craggy Mawenzi mountain and beyond. We must hike for an additional hour to reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). After leaving Stella Point, we start our descent by making our way back to Barafu Camp for breakfast before making our way down to Mkawe Camp for a well-earned rest.
We make a leisurely descent through the rain forest to the Mweka Gate, where we finish park formalities and earn certificates that you may display with pride! After that, our vehicles are waiting to pick us up, and we head back to the hotel in Moshi where you may treat yourself to a warm welcome shower.
