Best Time Of The Year TO Climbing Kilimanjaro
We typically suggest that the warmest and driest months of the year, which are December to mid-March and mid-June towards the end of October, are the best times to climb Kilimanjaro. Unfortunately, despite the fact that these are the months with the best weather for trekking, they also happen to be busiest. Regardless of the season, the likelihood of a significant weather change always exists.
The Lemosho route offers panoramic views of the mountain's numerous faces, making it the most picturesque trail on Kilimanjaro. Lemosho, one of the most recent routes, is a great option for your ascent. It is our favorite route because it strikes the perfect combination between sparse crowds, stunning scenery, and a high summit success rate. Most visitors who climb Kilimanjaro do so via the Lemosho route, and they have nothing but positive things to say about it. We strongly advise our clients to choose the Lemosho route. With an approach much to the west of the mountain, the ascent starts at Lemosho Gate at a height of 2360 meters. After that, it makes a circuit to the south of Kilimanjaro, traveling through a magnificent rainforest where some of the area's most unusual wildlife may frequently be spotted.
Departing from Moshi a 2-HRS drive will take you through welcoming mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles here.
Today you will trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. Our destination for today is the Shira 1 Camp from where there are often views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds. We gain a reasonable amount of altitude today and parts of the route are fairly steep.
After breakfast you will leave Shira I Camp (3,900 m) and start your way to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section of the route has a lot of ascents and descents that end in a camp at over 4,600 meters. It might be difficult, and you may feel some discomfort, but in order to successfully acclimate to the altitude you have to spend at least 1–2 hours here, so this is where lunch will be
Then you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). Here you can see the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in both its massive size and steepness! Next day you will be climbing it, but don't worry: it features a very simple hiking trail..
Continue east towards Kibo passing the junction, then east towards the Lava Tower here we take a lunch. Shortly after this, you descend to Barranco camp site (3960m, 4 hours).
After a good night rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.
We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position.
