All You Need To Know Before You Go 4 Days Calvin Season Serengeti Migration Tour Package 2024 & 2025

Tanzania serengeti migration 2024 & 2025.

Calvin Season.Calving usually takes place between January – February to March of each year. In January the herds begin making their way to the south of the Serengeti after the rains start falling. The question of how the herds know when it is raining or not is something many people have questioned and the answer is that we actually do not know! Many people say that they can smell the rain, others believe they can sense when the pressure in the air changes. The only thing we know for sure is that where it rains, the herds follow. Within a two to three-week time period, over half a million wildebeest are born with as many as 8 000 wildebeest being born on the same day!

Wildbeest Migration. There probably isn't anywhere else in the world a greater illustration of the circle of life. The journey begins in the Southern Serengeti during the calving season for wildebeest. A feast for the eyes of true wildlife fans, predators like lions and hyenas are continuously looking for young, and hundreds upon thousands of calves are born within a few weeks of one another. The herd heads north, towards the Masai Mara in Kenya, to feed on the tall green grass when the drought strikes in May. The gazelles and zebras follow shortly after. Risks associated with the journey include having to cross rivers in front of roughly 3,000 crocodiles that are waiting eagerly for a kill. Not to mention the lion population in the Serengeti, which is by far the largest in Africa. Despite the quantity of hoofed meat in the region, these huge cats struggle to survive in this harsh environment. Yet, witnessing a pride of lions working together to hunt down a wildebeest is an incredible sight.

Why do wildebeest migrate?
The enormous wildebeest herd's 800-kilometer journey is the world's longest animal migration. The migration occurs when the short-grass plains' nutrient-rich grasses become green during the rainy season. Because predators can be quickly identified, these locations are safer, making them the best places for calving. Wildebeest are compelled to migrate to the western corridor in search of greener pastures due to the drying of the plains. Although the ecosystem's northern portion receives the most rain, the grasses there are the least nutrient-rich. Until the south turns green again, this is where the wildebeest seek refuge during the dry season. A clockwise rotation from the south, west, north, and back to the south is the end result.

During the annual migration, the Serengeti is home to hundreds of thousands of animals. Wildebeest move northwest across the park when they cross the Grumeti River in June and July. It's a sight that is undoubtedly at the top of many travelers' must-see lists. The herds had begun to move southward toward the southern Serengeti by December. They eat the short, grassy grasses of the plains there as food. The wildebeest calving season in late January and early February is arguably the Serengeti's most spectacular event. During the busiest time of the Serengeti calving season, 8,000 newborn wildebeest are born every single day. Nothing quite compares to watching a baby wildebeest take off sprinting after only a few minutes after being born

The Serengeti during calving season promises an amazing trip full of awe and lots of action. It is natural for huge cats to hunt baby wildebeest. You may expect to witness some breathtaking kills during the brief calving season, especially from the nimble cheetahs.
