Tour Description

The Umbwe path is an easy-to-follow, short, and steep route. It is the most demanding route up Mount Kilimanjaro and is thought to be exceedingly difficult. Umbwe does not offer the requisite steps for acclimation to altitude because of the fast ascent. Although there is extremely little traffic on this route, the likelihood of success is also very low. Although seven days are advised when tackling this route, it is provided at a minimum of six days. Only extremely fit hikers who are confident in their capacity to acclimatize should attempt the Umbwe route. The Umbwe route is generally not advised, and we advise our clients against using it.

Best 6 days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary in 2024

Departing from Moshi driving to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles here. The path follows a ridge between two deep valleys up through the dense montane forest. The camp is perched between huge trees and thick undergrowth

The trail's initial segment keeps following the ridge. To get to Barranco Camp after leaving the forest, travel through open moorlands. Due to its surroundings of enormous senecios and lobelias, Barranco is sometimes cited as the Umbwe Trail's most picturesque campsite. Barranco's valley location causes it to rise later than the other camps.

Leaving towards Karanga Valley after breakfast from Barranco Camp. A one and a half hour struggle up the Barranco Wall starts the day. The hardest portion of the day is now upon you, and in certain spots you might need to use your hands to help you climb. Once at the summit, continue hiking on reasonably flat ground before descending quickly  steeply into the lush Karanga River Valley.

Start the climb to Barafu Camp after breakfast. View many of Kibo's glaciers as well as the intersection where the Machame path and the Mweka descending route meet on the way to Barafu. Hike beside the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers on day four. Barafu Camp provides breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks despite the fact that the path to Barafu travels through alpine desert with minimal flora. After supper, try to get some sleep because you need to be up for your summit trek before midnight.

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through a heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit

From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!

From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.

In the morning after breakfast you will be trekking down to Mweka gate. The trek is a pleasant one through the lower rain-forested slopes and down to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters). Although you cover 9km / 5.5 miles, the trek only takes 3-4 hours. Assuming you successfully reach Stella Point or Uhuru Peak you will be presented with official certificates – a green certificate for the former and a gold certificate for the latter. It is customary to tip your trekking crew before being transported back to your hotel in Moshi.
