5 Day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Trek
The 5 Day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Trek is a classic Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary following the Marangu Route from the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Often known as the hut route, Marangu is the main Kilimanjaro route where climbers sleep in permanent mountain huts instead of tents.
The trail begins at Marangu Gate and climbs through tropical rainforest to Mandara Hut before continuing across heath and moorland toward Horombo Hut.
From Horombo, the landscape becomes increasingly dry and exposed as the route crosses the alpine desert toward Kibo Hut.
The summit attempt normally begins around midnight, climbing toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim before continuing toward Uhuru Peak at approximately 5,895 metres above sea level.
After reaching the highest point possible according to personal condition, weather and guide assessment, climbers descend to Horombo Hut before completing the trek at Marangu Gate the following day.
The five day itinerary is physically demanding because it does not include the additional acclimatization day normally included in the six day Marangu itinerary.
