7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek via the Machame Route

The 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek provides a scenic and well paced journey across Mount Kilimanjaro using the popular Machame Route. The seven day itinerary includes an overnight stay at Karanga Camp, providing additional time on the mountain before reaching Barafu Camp and beginning the summit attempt.

The route starts at Machame Gate on Kilimanjaro's southwestern slopes and travels through rainforest, heath, moorland, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley and alpine desert. Climbers then continue through Karanga toward Barafu before attempting Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres and descending through the Mweka Route.

7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek at a Glance

  • Route: Machame Route.
  • Starting point: Machame Gate.
  • Finishing point: Mweka Gate.
  • Highest point: Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
  • Accommodation: Mountain tents at designated camps.
  • Acclimatisation: Lava Tower exposure and overnight at Karanga Camp.
  • Main highlights: Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, Barafu Camp and Uhuru Peak.

Main Kilimanjaro Trekking Experience

The seven day Machame itinerary is often chosen by travellers who want more time for altitude adjustment than the shorter six day option. Instead of trekking from Barranco through Karanga directly to Barafu in one day, climbers stay overnight at Karanga Camp before continuing to the summit base.

The trekking environment changes dramatically as elevation increases. You begin inside lush montane rainforest before entering heath and moorland, volcanic alpine desert and eventually the cold high altitude summit zone.

The additional day can support a more gradual altitude progression, but Kilimanjaro remains physically demanding. Altitude affects every climber differently, and reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed.

DAY
01
RAINFOREST TREK

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro trek begins with a road transfer to Machame Gate. After registration and completion of national park procedures, you meet your guides, mountain cook and porter team before beginning the trail.

The first trekking stage climbs through dense montane rainforest. Conditions can be humid and sections of the trail may become muddy after rainfall, so waterproof boots and suitable rain protection are important.

Your guide keeps the pace slow and controlled while the group adjusts to the first significant elevation gain. Later in the day you reach Machame Camp for dinner, rest and an evening briefing.

Day Highlights
  • Machame Gate registration
  • Montane rainforest trekking
  • First altitude adjustment
  • Arrival at Machame Camp
Accommodation
Mountain tent at Machame Camp.

Lunch and dinner.
Trekking

After breakfast, leave the rainforest and climb into Kilimanjaro's heath and moorland zone. Vegetation gradually becomes shorter as the trail gains elevation and the surrounding views become more open.

The route continues toward the Shira Plateau, part of an ancient volcanic landscape on Kilimanjaro's western side. When weather conditions are clear, there may be impressive views toward Kibo and across the plains below.

After reaching Shira Camp, you have time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the important acclimatisation trek toward Lava Tower the following day.

Day Highlights
  • Heath and moorland landscapes
  • Shira Plateau
  • Possible views toward Kibo
  • Continued acclimatisation

Mountain tent at Shira Camp.

DAY
03
ACCLIMATISATION DAY

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp

Day three is one of the most important stages of the 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek. The route climbs through increasingly barren volcanic terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.

This high point provides valuable altitude exposure before the trail descends toward Barranco. Spending part of the day higher and sleeping at a lower elevation is an important feature of the Machame Route's acclimatisation profile.

The trail descends through dramatic volcanic landscapes into Barranco Valley before reaching camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Day Highlights
  • Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 m
  • Important altitude exposure
  • Alpine desert landscape
  • Barranco Valley
  • Barranco Wall scenery
Accommodation
Mountain tent at Barranco Camp.

DAY
04
BARRANCO WALL

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, begin climbing the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks steep from camp, the trekking route follows a manageable rocky path with guides assisting where careful footing and balance are needed.

Once above the wall, continue through a series of ridges and valleys. When conditions are clear, this section can provide impressive views across Kilimanjaro's southern slopes and high mountain landscape.

The trail eventually descends into Karanga Valley before climbing toward Karanga Camp. The seven day itinerary stays overnight here instead of continuing directly to Barafu.

Day Highlights
  • Barranco Wall climb
  • Southern Kilimanjaro landscapes
  • Karanga Valley
  • Additional altitude exposure
  • Overnight at Karanga Camp
Accommodation
Mountain tent at Karanga Camp.
Meals

SUMMIT PREPARATION

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, leave Karanga and begin climbing toward Barafu Camp. The route becomes increasingly dry and exposed as vegetation disappears and the landscape changes into high altitude alpine desert.

The trekking distance is shorter than several earlier days, allowing climbers to reach Barafu with time to rest before the demanding summit attempt.

At Barafu Camp, you eat, hydrate and prepare your summit equipment. Warm clothing, headlamp, gloves, water and other essential items should be organised before your guide provides the final summit briefing.

Day Highlights
  • Shorter trekking stage
  • Alpine desert terrain
  • Arrival at Barafu Camp
  • Rest before summit night
  • Final summit briefing
Accommodation
Mountain tent at Barafu Camp.
Meals

DAY
06
SUMMIT DAY

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Summit day normally begins around midnight. After a light meal and final equipment check, you start trekking slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on Kilimanjaro's crater rim.

The climb is physically demanding because of steep terrain, cold temperatures and reduced oxygen. Professional guides manage the pace and continually monitor climbers during the ascent.

Climbers who reach Stella Point and remain fit to continue follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and in Africa.

After a short summit stop when weather and health conditions allow, begin the long descent toward Barafu Camp. After resting, continue farther down the mountain toward Mweka Camp.

Summit Day Highlights
  • Midnight summit departure
  • Stella Point
  • Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
  • Possible sunrise views depending on timing
  • Long descent toward Mweka Camp
Accommodation
Mountain tent at Mweka Camp.

Approx. 12–16 hours | summit 5,895 m | descend to around 3,100 m.
DAY
07
FINAL DESCENT

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Moshi

After breakfast, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro's lower slopes. Vegetation becomes increasingly dense as you return to the rainforest environment.

At Mweka Gate, the trekking team completes the required Kilimanjaro National Park procedures. Eligible climbers receive the appropriate certificate based on the highest point reached during the trek.

You then return to Moshi by road, where you can shower, rest and celebrate the completion of your seven day Kilimanjaro trekking adventure.

Porters carry communal mountain equipment, food and approved duffel luggage. Climbers carry a personal daypack containing drinking water, warm layers, rain protection, snacks, medication and important personal items.

Mount Kilimanjaro can be trekked during much of the year. January to early March and approximately June through October are popular periods because conditions are often relatively dry.

Important Information About the 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek

The 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek provides additional time at altitude compared with the six day Machame itinerary because climbers stay overnight at Karanga Camp before moving to Barafu.

This additional day can support acclimatisation, but it does not guarantee successful adjustment to altitude or reaching Uhuru Peak. Every traveller responds differently, and the professional guide's health and safety decisions should always be followed.

Daily distances, elevations and trekking times are approximate. Weather, trail conditions, group pace, altitude response and guide decisions can affect the exact schedule.

Why Book This 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek?

The 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek offers a balanced Machame Route itinerary with scenic mountain landscapes and additional time before summit night. Trekkers experience rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga Camp and Barafu before attempting the final journey toward Uhuru Peak.

The trek can also be combined with a Tanzania safari to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater or followed by a relaxing Zanzibar beach holiday.
