6 Day Private Machame Route Climb on Mount Kilimanjaro
The 6 Day Private Machame Route Climb combines one of Kilimanjaro's most popular trekking routes with the flexibility and personal attention of a private mountain expedition. Instead of joining unrelated climbers, your booking is organised around you and the people travelling with you.
The Machame Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southwest and crosses several ecological zones before reaching the summit trail from Barafu Camp. During the six trekking days, climbers pass through rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley and the high altitude summit environment before descending through Mweka Route.

Main Private Machame Route Experience
A private Kilimanjaro climb allows your guides to focus closely on your own trekking group. The pace can be managed around your fitness, comfort and altitude response while still following national park rules and the required mountain schedule.
The Machame Route is known for changing scenery. The trek starts inside dense montane rainforest before climbing into heath and moorland, volcanic alpine desert and finally the cold high altitude summit zone.
The six day version is demanding because it progresses more quickly than longer Machame itineraries. Good physical preparation, slow trekking and careful altitude monitoring are important. Reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed because each climber responds differently to altitude.

PRIVATE RAINFOREST TREK
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your private Kilimanjaro adventure begins with pickup from your accommodation in Moshi and a road transfer to Machame Gate. After completing registration and park procedures, you meet your dedicated mountain crew and prepare to begin the trek.
The first stage follows a steadily rising trail through Kilimanjaro's montane rainforest. Conditions can be humid, and rain can make some sections muddy, so waterproof trekking boots and rain protection are useful.
Because this is a private climb, your guide can pay close attention to your group's pace from the first day. You reach Machame Camp later in the afternoon for dinner, rest and an evening briefing.
Day Highlights
- Private transfer to Machame Gate
- Kilimanjaro National Park registration
- Montane rainforest trekking
- Personalised guide attention
- First night at Machame Camp

The route climbs toward the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape on Kilimanjaro's western side. When weather is clear, there may be impressive views toward Kibo and across the plains below.
Your private guide keeps the trekking pace comfortable and monitors how each climber is responding to the increasing altitude. You reach Shira Camp later in the day for rest and preparation for the important acclimatisation trek ahead.

- Shira Plateau landscapes
- Possible Kibo views

ACCLIMATISATION DAY
Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
Day three is an important stage of the 6 Day Private Machame Route Climb. The route climbs through increasingly barren volcanic terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.
Reaching this higher elevation provides valuable altitude exposure before descending toward Barranco. Your private guide can closely observe how members of your group respond to the higher elevation and adjust the pace where necessary.
The trail then descends through Barranco Valley toward camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall. The combination of climbing high and sleeping lower is an important feature of this section of the Machame Route.
Day Highlights
- Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 m
- Important acclimatisation stage
- Alpine desert scenery
- Barranco Valley descent
- Barranco Wall views

BARRANCO WALL
Barranco Camp via Karanga to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, begin the climb up the famous Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks steep from below, the trekking route follows a manageable rocky path. Your private guide can provide close assistance through sections requiring careful footing and balance.
After reaching the top, continue across rolling alpine terrain before descending toward Karanga Valley. The trail then climbs steadily toward Barafu Camp, the final base for the summit attempt.
At Barafu, you eat, hydrate and prepare your warm clothing, gloves, headlamp, water and summit equipment. Your guide conducts the final health assessment and summit briefing before an early rest.

- Karanga Valley
- High altitude alpine terrain

PRIVATE SUMMIT DAY
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Summit day normally begins around midnight. After a light meal and final equipment check, your private guide leads you slowly upward through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
This is the most demanding section of the climb. Cold temperatures, steep terrain and reduced oxygen make careful pacing essential. With a private arrangement, your guide can focus closely on the condition, pace and altitude response of your own group.
Climbers who reach Stella Point and remain fit to continue follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. After photographs and a short summit stop when conditions allow, begin the long descent to Barafu Camp and continue farther down toward Mweka Camp.
Summit Day Highlights

- Stella Point

At Mweka Gate, your trekking crew completes the required national park procedures. Eligible climbers receive the appropriate certificate according to the highest point reached during the climb.

Important Information About the 6 Day Private Machame Route Climb
The 6 Day Private Machame Route Climb gives your group more personal attention, but the route still progresses quickly at altitude. Travellers who want additional acclimatisation time may prefer to compare the six day itinerary with a seven day Machame Route.
Daily distances, elevations and trekking times are approximate. Weather, trail conditions, individual pace, altitude response and guide safety decisions can affect the exact schedule.
A private climb does not guarantee reaching Uhuru Peak. The summit attempt always depends on each climber's health, altitude response and the professional judgement of the mountain guides.
