The Lemosho Route offers a varied approach to Kilimanjaro, beginning on the quieter western side of the mountain and crossing the open Shira Plateau before meeting trails used by other southern Kilimanjaro routes.
The itinerary includes useful altitude exposure at Lava Tower followed by descent to Barranco Camp. It also separates the journey from Barranco to Karanga and Karanga to Barafu into different trekking days, providing additional time before summit night.

DAY
01
WESTERN KILIMANJARO
Lemosho Trailhead to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your 7 day Lemosho Route adventure begins with transportation toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing the required national park registration and mountain preparations, you continue toward the Lemosho trailhead.
The first trekking stage enters a dense montane rainforest filled with tall trees, moss, ferns and rich vegetation. The trail climbs gradually as you begin gaining altitude.
Rain can occur within this ecological zone, so waterproof clothing should remain easily accessible. Your guides establish a slow walking pace from the beginning to conserve energy and introduce your body gradually to the increasing elevation.
Later in the day, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, where your mountain crew prepares the campsite and evening meal.
Day Highlights
- Western Kilimanjaro approach
- Montane rainforest trekking
- Gradual introduction to altitude
- First night at Mti Mkubwa Camp
Accommodation
Mti Mkubwa Camp in mountain tents.
Meals
Lunch and dinner.
Terrain
Dense rainforest with a gradually ascending mountain trail.
DAY
02
SHIRA PLATEAU
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
After breakfast, leave Mti Mkubwa Camp and continue climbing through the upper forest. The dense vegetation gradually becomes thinner as the route approaches the heath and moorland zone.
The trail becomes more open as you gain elevation. Climbers begin experiencing the broad mountain scenery that makes the western Lemosho approach particularly attractive.
You continue toward the western edge of the Shira Plateau, an ancient high altitude landscape that offers impressive views when the weather is clear.
Kibo may become visible across the plateau, providing your first major view toward the summit area. You later arrive at Shira 1 Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day Highlights
- Leave the rainforest zone
- Heath and moorland trekking
- Enter the Shira Plateau
- Possible views toward Kibo
- Overnight at Shira 1 Camp
Accommodation
Shira 1 Camp in mountain tents.
Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Environment
Heath, moorland and open Shira Plateau scenery.
DAY
03
LAVA TOWER
Shira 1 Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
Day three is an important and longer trekking stage of the 7 day Lemosho Route. After breakfast, you continue across the Shira Plateau and gradually move toward the higher alpine environment.
The route passes through increasingly open terrain before climbing toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres. As the elevation increases, vegetation becomes sparse and the effects of thinner air may become more noticeable.
After reaching the Lava Tower area, climbers normally rest and eat before beginning the descent toward Barranco Valley.
Reaching a higher elevation and then descending to Barranco Camp follows the climb high and sleep lower principle. This is one of the most important acclimatisation features of the route.
Barranco Camp sits below the dramatic Barranco Wall, providing one of the most memorable mountain settings on Kilimanjaro.
Day Highlights
- Cross the Shira Plateau
- Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres
- Important altitude exposure
- Climb high and sleep lower profile
- Barranco Valley and Barranco Wall views
Accommodation
Barranco Camp in mountain tents.
Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Acclimatisation
Gain elevation toward Lava Tower before descending to sleep at Barranco.
DAY
04
BARRANCO WALL
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, begin the ascent of Barranco Wall. The wall appears dramatic from camp, but the recognised trekking route follows a series of rocky sections that do not normally require technical climbing equipment.
Some sections require careful movement and using your hands for balance. Your professional guides assist where necessary and help maintain a controlled pace.
Once above the wall, the trail crosses a series of ridges and valleys with impressive views across the southern side of Kilimanjaro when conditions are clear.
The route later descends into Karanga Valley before climbing toward Karanga Camp. Spending the night here provides another stage at altitude before progressing to Barafu Camp.
Day Highlights
- Barranco Wall ascent
- High mountain ridges
- Karanga Valley
- Additional time at altitude
- Overnight at Karanga Camp
Accommodation
Karanga Camp in mountain tents.
Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Route Stage
Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley and overnight before Barafu.
DAY
05
BARAFU CAMP
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp. Vegetation becomes extremely limited as the route moves through the high alpine desert toward the summit base.
The trail gains elevation steadily, but the separate Karanga overnight means this stage is shorter than combining Barranco, Karanga and Barafu into one trekking day.
After reaching Barafu Camp, your focus turns toward summit preparation. Your guides explain the expected summit schedule and help check your essential equipment.
Warm layers, gloves, headlamp, water, snacks and other summit items should be organised before dinner. Climbers normally rest early because the final ascent begins around midnight.
Day Highlights
- High alpine desert
- Arrival at Barafu Camp
- Final summit briefing
- Summit equipment preparation
- Early rest before summit night
Accommodation
Barafu Camp in mountain tents.
Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Preparation
Final briefing, summit equipment check and early rest.
DAY
06
UHURU PEAK
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Summit day normally begins around midnight. After a light meal and final preparation, you leave Barafu Camp and begin the slow ascent through darkness and cold temperatures.
The summit trail is physically demanding because of the high altitude, steep sections, fatigue and reduced oxygen. Climbers move slowly while the mountain guides monitor pace and wellbeing.
The route gradually climbs toward Stella Point on Kilimanjaro's crater rim. Reaching the crater rim is a major milestone, but the journey continues toward the highest point.
From Stella Point, continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Climbers who reach the summit normally spend a limited amount of time there because of the altitude and cold conditions.
After photographs and a short celebration, begin descending toward Barafu Camp. Following rest and food, continue farther down the mountain to Mweka Camp for the final overnight stay.
Day Highlights
- Midnight summit departure
- Stella Point
- Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres
- Possible sunrise views
- Long descent toward Mweka Camp
Accommodation
Mweka Camp in mountain tents.
Meals
Meals according to summit timing and the trekking program.
Highest Point
Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.
DAY
07
MWEKA GATE
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, begin the final descent through Kilimanjaro's lower mountain environment. Vegetation becomes increasingly dense as the trail enters the rainforest.
Temperatures become warmer as you lose altitude, creating a dramatic contrast with the alpine desert and summit conditions experienced during the previous days.
You eventually arrive at Mweka Gate, where Kilimanjaro National Park exit procedures are completed and your seven day Lemosho Route trek officially finishes.
After meeting your transfer vehicle, you return to Moshi or your confirmed accommodation. Additional hotel nights, airport transportation, Tanzania safari extensions or Zanzibar travel can be arranged according to your onward plans.
Day Highlights
- Final rainforest descent
- Arrival at Mweka Gate
- Completion of the Lemosho Route
- Transfer back to Moshi
Accommodation
No mountain accommodation. Hotel stay depends on the confirmed package.

Lemosho Route Scenery
One of the defining features of the Lemosho Route is the variety of landscapes experienced during the climb. The trek begins in lush rainforest before emerging onto the open western slopes and Shira Plateau.
As elevation increases, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and eventually gives way to alpine desert. The southern circuit then provides dramatic views of Kilimanjaro's upper slopes before the final summit ascent.
7 Day Lemosho Route Acclimatisation
Acclimatisation is an important part of every Kilimanjaro itinerary. The Lemosho Route gains altitude progressively while crossing the western side of the mountain and Shira Plateau.
The ascent toward Lava Tower followed by descent to Barranco Camp provides an important climb high and sleep lower stage. The overnight at Karanga also provides another mountain day before climbers reach Barafu summit camp.
Acclimatisation Tips
- Maintain a slow walking pace.
- Drink water regularly.
- Eat enough throughout the trek.
- Rest whenever possible.
- Keep warm at higher elevations.
- Report altitude symptoms immediately to your guide.
How Difficult Is the 7 Day Lemosho Route?
The seven day Lemosho Route is a demanding high altitude trek. Climbers walk for several consecutive days and eventually reach an elevation of 5,895 metres at Uhuru Peak.
The greatest challenges normally include altitude, changing weather conditions, long trekking stages and summit night. Technical mountaineering experience is not normally required for the standard route, but good fitness and proper preparation are important.
Barranco Wall on the Lemosho Route
Barranco Wall is one of the most recognisable sections of the southern circuit. From Barranco Camp, the wall appears steep and dramatic, but climbers follow an established trekking route.
Some sections involve using your hands for balance and careful movement. Professional mountain guides provide instructions and assistance where necessary.
Camping Accommodation
The Lemosho Route is a camping route. Climbers sleep in mountain tents throughout the expedition at camps such as Mti Mkubwa, Shira, Barranco, Karanga, Barafu and Mweka.
The mountain crew transports and prepares shared camping equipment while climbers carry a smaller day bag containing water, waterproof clothing, medication, snacks and other items required while trekking.
Meals and Drinking Water
A mountain cook prepares meals throughout the trek according to the climbing program. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are normally provided during mountain days, with timing adjusted around summit night.
Dietary requirements should be communicated before the climb so suitable arrangements can be prepared where possible.
Professional Guides and Porter Support
Professional Kilimanjaro guides manage the route schedule, trekking pace, daily mountain briefings and climber wellbeing throughout the expedition.
Porters transport shared equipment, food and the permitted main luggage while climbers carry their own day bags. The final crew size depends on the number of trekkers and operational requirements.

Kilimanjaro Safety and Mountain Support
Professional mountain guides manage the daily trekking pace and monitor climber wellbeing throughout the Lemosho Route.
Climbers should communicate openly about headaches, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue or other concerning symptoms. Altitude can affect people differently regardless of age or fitness level.
Reaching Uhuru Peak is an important objective, but climber health and safe descent remain the priority throughout the expedition.
7 Day vs 8 Day Lemosho Route
Both itineraries follow the western Lemosho approach, but an 8 day itinerary normally provides an additional mountain stage and more time for gradual altitude adjustment.
The 7 day Lemosho Route is suitable for travellers who want a complete Lemosho experience within seven mountain days, while climbers who prefer a slower schedule may consider the longer option.
Private and Group Lemosho Climbs
The Lemosho Route can be organised as a private expedition or a scheduled group climb depending on departure availability.
Private departures provide a dedicated arrangement for you and your travelling companions, while group departures allow travellers to share the mountain experience and selected logistics with other climbers.
Best Time for the 7 Day Lemosho Route
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed during much of the year. Many travellers choose generally drier periods because mountain trails and visibility may be more favourable.
Conditions can still change quickly at altitude. Climbers should prepare for rain, strong wind, freezing temperatures and possible snow or ice near the summit regardless of travel dates.
