Main Kilimanjaro Group Climbing Experience
A group climb allows travellers to join other people with the same goal of trekking Mount Kilimanjaro. Solo travellers, couples and friends can share the mountain journey while still receiving professional guiding and crew support throughout the expedition.
The seven day Machame itinerary provides an additional night at Karanga Camp compared with the shorter six day program. This gives the group more time on the mountain before reaching Barafu summit camp.
Although climbers travel as a group, individual health and altitude response remain important. Professional guides monitor each climber, and no one should feel pressured to continue when health or safety concerns arise. Reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed.

GROUP TREK BEGINS
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your group Kilimanjaro adventure begins with transport to Machame Gate. After registration and national park procedures, the group meets the professional mountain guides, cook and porter team before starting the trek.
The trail climbs steadily through lush montane rainforest. Conditions can be humid and sections may become muddy after rainfall, making waterproof trekking boots and rain protection important.
The group follows a slow and controlled pace while everyone begins adjusting to altitude. Later in the day, you reach Machame Camp for dinner, introductions, rest and the first overnight on the mountain.
Day Highlights
- Meet your group and mountain crew
- Machame Gate registration

The route climbs toward the Shira Plateau, part of Kilimanjaro's ancient volcanic landscape. When weather conditions are clear, there may be impressive views toward Kibo and across the surrounding plains.
At Shira Camp, the group rests, hydrates and prepares for the important acclimatisation stage toward Lava Tower the following day.

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
Day three is one of the most important acclimatisation stages of the 7 Day Kilimanjaro Group Climb. The trail climbs through increasingly barren terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.
The group spends part of the day at higher elevation before descending toward Barranco Camp. This pattern of gaining altitude during the day and sleeping lower is useful for acclimatisation.
The descent leads through dramatic volcanic scenery into Barranco Valley before reaching camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.
Day Highlights
- Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 m
- Important altitude exposure
- Alpine desert scenery
- Barranco Valley descent
- Barranco Wall views

BARRANCO WALL
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, the group begins climbing Barranco Wall. Although the wall looks steep from camp, the route follows a manageable rocky trail where guides assist climbers through sections requiring careful footing and balance.
After reaching the top, continue across ridges and valleys on Kilimanjaro's southern side. The group maintains a steady pace while enjoying changing views when weather conditions are clear.
The trail eventually descends into Karanga Valley before climbing toward Karanga Camp. Staying here overnight provides additional time at altitude before reaching the summit base.

SUMMIT PREPARATION
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

This is normally a shorter trekking stage than several earlier days, giving the group more time to rest and prepare before summit night.
At Barafu, climbers organise warm summit clothing, gloves, headlamps, water and other essential equipment. The guides conduct final health checks and provide the summit briefing before an early rest.
Day Highlights
- High altitude alpine desert
- Arrival at Barafu Camp
- Shorter pre summit stage
- Group rest and hydration
- Final summit briefing
Accommodation
Mountain tent at Barafu Camp.
Meals

SUMMIT DAY
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Summit day normally begins around midnight. After a light meal and final equipment check, the group starts climbing slowly toward Stella Point on Kilimanjaro's crater rim.
Cold temperatures, steep terrain and reduced oxygen make this the most demanding section of the 7 Day Kilimanjaro Group Climb. Guides manage the pace and monitor each person individually throughout the ascent.
Climbers who reach Stella Point and remain fit to continue follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Not every climber will necessarily progress at the same pace, and guide decisions are based on individual health and safety.
After the summit attempt, descend toward Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing much farther down the mountain toward Mweka Camp.
Summit Day Highlights
- Midnight summit departure
- Stella Point
- Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres

FINAL DESCENT
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Moshi
After breakfast, the group begins the final descent through increasingly lush vegetation toward Mweka Gate. Temperatures become warmer as altitude decreases and the trail returns to the rainforest environment.
At Mweka Gate, the mountain team completes the required national park procedures. Eligible climbers receive the appropriate certificate based on the highest point reached during the climb.
After saying goodbye to the mountain crew and fellow climbers, road transport returns you to Moshi for rest and onward travel.

Important Information About the 7 Day Kilimanjaro Group Climb
The 7 Day Kilimanjaro Group Climb follows a shared departure, but mountain safety is always managed individually. Climbers may walk at slightly different speeds, and professional guides can make different recommendations for different group members depending on altitude response and health.
The seven day Machame itinerary provides additional time before summit night compared with the six day option, but it does not guarantee successful acclimatisation or reaching Uhuru Peak.
Group size, tent arrangements, hotel room arrangements, departure confirmation and exact inclusions should be checked before booking. Daily trekking distances, elevations and times are approximate and can be affected by weather, pace, trail conditions and guide safety decisions.
