7 Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Itinerary
The 7 Day Machame Route offers a scenic journey across the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro with an additional mountain night compared with the shorter six day version. The itinerary includes an overnight stay at Karanga Camp, providing more time at altitude before climbers continue toward Barafu Camp and the final summit attempt.
The route begins at Machame Gate and passes through montane rainforest, heath, moorland, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, Karanga and alpine desert. Climbers then continue toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres before descending through the Mweka Route.

Main Machame Route Experience
Machame is popular because it combines varied scenery with a route profile that provides several opportunities for altitude adjustment. Climbers approach Kilimanjaro from the southwest before traversing toward the southern side of the mountain.
The trail changes dramatically as elevation increases. The climb begins inside dense rainforest before moving into heath and moorland, volcanic terrain, alpine desert and finally the cold summit environment.
The seven day itinerary separates the Barranco to Barafu section into two days. Climbers stay overnight at Karanga Camp before continuing to Barafu, giving additional time on the mountain before summit night. Altitude still affects every traveller differently, and reaching Uhuru Peak cannot be guaranteed.

RAINFOREST TREK
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your Machame Route adventure begins with a road transfer to Machame Gate. After registration and completion of Kilimanjaro National Park procedures, you meet your professional mountain guides, cook and porter team before starting the trek.
The trail climbs steadily through lush montane rainforest. Conditions can be humid, and rainfall may make sections muddy, so waterproof trekking boots and rain protection are useful.
Your guide maintains a slow and controlled pace as the group gains its first significant elevation. Later in the day, you arrive at Machame Camp for dinner, rest and an evening briefing.

- Machame Gate registration
- Montane rainforest trekking

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
Day three is one of the most important acclimatisation stages of the 7 Day Machame Route. The trail climbs through increasingly barren volcanic terrain toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.
Reaching this higher elevation gives the body useful exposure to reduced oxygen before the route descends toward Barranco Camp. This pattern of climbing high and sleeping lower is an important feature of the Machame Route.
The descent leads through dramatic alpine scenery and Barranco Valley before reaching camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.
Day Highlights
- Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 m
- Important altitude exposure
- Volcanic alpine desert
- Barranco Valley

After reaching the top of the wall, continue across ridges and valleys on Kilimanjaro's southern slopes. When conditions are clear, this section can provide impressive views across the high mountain landscape.
The route eventually descends into Karanga Valley before climbing toward Karanga Camp. The overnight stay here is one of the main differences between the seven day and six day Machame itineraries.

At Barafu Camp, eat, hydrate and prepare your warm clothing, summit gloves, headlamp, water and other essential equipment. Your guide provides the final summit briefing before an early rest.

Summit day normally begins around midnight. After a light meal and final equipment check, begin climbing slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
Cold temperatures, steep terrain and reduced oxygen make this the most physically demanding stage of the 7 Day Machame Route. Your professional guides control the pace and monitor climbers throughout the ascent.
Climbers who reach Stella Point and remain fit to continue follow the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro.
After photographs and a short summit stop when health and weather conditions allow, begin descending toward Barafu Camp. Following a rest, continue farther down toward Mweka Camp.

Important Information About the 7 Day Machame Route

This extra day may support acclimatisation and provides a shorter trekking stage before summit night, but it cannot guarantee successful adjustment to altitude or reaching Uhuru Peak. Safety and the professional judgement of mountain guides should always take priority.
Daily distances, elevations and trekking times are approximate. Weather, trail conditions, group pace, individual altitude response and guide decisions can affect the exact schedule.
